What is a
Third Space?
Traditionally, a third place is somewhere outside of home and work—a coffee shop, park, bookstore, or community space where people gather and connect.
At Our Third Space, we make that idea a little more personal.
We believe the feeling matters just as much as the place. A Third Space isn't limited to somewhere you go or people you gather with. It can also be a moment, a few deep breaths, or an experience that helps you feel more like yourself.
An afternoon near the ocean. Dinner with friends. Making something with your hands. Moving your body in a way that feels good. Trying a class you've been curious about. Ten quiet minutes before the rest of the house wakes up.
Somewhere between routines, responsibilities, and everything you think you should be doing, it's easy to lose touch with what makes you feel like yourself.
You don't need to reinvent your life. Sometimes it's simply about making more room for what matters to you.
It doesn't have to look a certain way. It just has to feel like yours.
A life that feels like yours isn’t found by chance —
it’s made in the spaces you choose.

Why Making Space
Modern life asks a lot of us—responsibilities, notifications, endless to-do lists, and the constant pressure to keep up.
When you're always showing up for everyone else, it's easy to lose sight of what makes you feel like yourself. Making intentional space gives you a chance to recharge, reconnect, and return to your life feeling more present, energized, and fulfilled.
Because when you make room for yourself, you have more of yourself to give to the people you love.
For one person, that might mean time alone in nature. For someone else, creating something, moving their body, laughing with friends, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.
A Third Space isn't another thing to accomplish. It's space to experience your life.
There's no single right way to do this. The point is to notice what makes you feel good—and make more room for it.
Matters
What we make
room for can shape how we
feel
Nature, movement, creativity, connection, quiet, and new experiences can each support our wellbeing in different ways.
Explore why these everyday experiences matter.
-
Sometimes all it takes is a little time outside to feel a difference. A clearer mind, a better mood, a little less stress. Spending time in nature can support both our physical and mental wellbeing, often in ways we don't even realize.
And it doesn't have to mean hiking or spending hours outdoors. Sitting near water, walking through a park, having coffee outside, gardening, or watching the sunset can all create a shift in how a day feels.
Why it helps: Ever notice how much more relaxed you feel just sitting by the water? Researchers call these environments blue spaces, and studies have linked them to improved mental wellbeing. One possible explanation is something called soft fascination—the gentle movement of waves, rustling leaves, or passing clouds can hold our attention without requiring much mental effort, giving our minds a chance to rest and recharge.
-
Creative activities give us a chance to get out of our heads and become absorbed in what we're doing instead of constantly thinking about what's next. Baking, painting, writing, arranging flowers, photography, or crafting can give our attention somewhere different to go.
It's not about being talented or producing something impressive. The value can be in curiosity, learning, focus, and enjoying the process itself.
Why it helps: Ever get so caught up in making something that you completely lose track of time? That's sometimes called a flow state—when you're fully immersed in an activity and the usual mental chatter fades into the background. Creative activities can help us experience moments of focused attention, reduce everyday stress, and build a sense of satisfaction simply from doing something we enjoy.
-
Movement supports both physical and mental wellbeing, but it doesn't have to look like a formal workout. Walking, stretching, swimming, dancing, biking, gardening, yoga, Pilates, or trying a beginner class can all help you feel more energized and connected to your body.
The goal isn't to move because you think you should. It's to find the kinds of movement that actually feel good enough that you want to come back to them.
Why it helps: Ever notice how a walk or a little dancing can completely shift your mood? Physical activity can trigger the release of chemicals involved in regulating mood and stress, while also supporting better sleep, energy, strength, and mobility. And here's something worth remembering: movement you genuinely enjoy is often easier to make part of your life than exercise that feels like another obligation.
-
Not every Third Space needs to be active, productive, or social. Sometimes what you need most is a little less stimulation.
Reading, sitting outside without your phone, journaling, having coffee by yourself, listening to music, or simply having a few quiet minutes can give your attention a break from constantly taking things in.
Why it helps: Ever notice how your mind starts to wander when you're in the shower or taking a quiet walk? When we're not constantly responding to information or demands, our brains have more room for reflection, processing thoughts, and making unexpected connections. These quieter moments can help ease mental overload and give us space to notice what we're feeling, thinking, or needing.
-
Trying something new can interrupt the sameness of everyday routines. It might be a new coffee shop, a class you've never taken, a neighborhood you've never explored, a food you've never ordered, or a day trip somewhere nearby.
New experiences give us something to anticipate, pay attention to, and remember. They can also remind us that there are still parts of ourselves we haven't explored yet.
Why it helps: Ever feel like entire weeks fly by, but you can barely remember what you did? When our days become predictable, our memories can start to blend together. Novel experiences encourage our brains to pay closer attention and create more distinct memories, which can make life feel fuller and more memorable. And the best part? Something new doesn't have to be something big. Even a small change in your routine can introduce a little excitement and curiosity into an ordinary day.
-
Meaningful connection can have a powerful effect on how we feel, and it doesn't have to mean having a packed social calendar. Sometimes it's dinner with a friend, coffee with a family member, joining a book club, calling someone you miss, or simply spending more intentional time with the people already in your life.
Connection can also come from shared experiences—taking a class, volunteering, joining a local group, or being around people with similar interests.
Why it helps: Ever notice how much lighter you feel after a good conversation with someone who really gets you? Feeling genuinely connected can help buffer stress, strengthen our sense of belonging, and support both emotional and physical health. And here's something worth remembering: it's not simply the number of people we know that matters. The quality of our relationships—and feeling seen, understood, and supported—can make a meaningful difference.
